Mystery Snails (Pomacea bridgesii) are one of the most popular and functional invertebrates in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for their striking colors and active personalities, these "peaceful giants" serve as an efficient cleanup crew, tirelessly scouring substrate, glass, and décor for algae and leftover food.
Shipping Size: Juvenile (Nickel-sized, ~0.8 inches). These are the perfect age to begin their lifelong "cleanup crew" duties in your tank!
Key Features
Vibrant Color Morphs: Unlike common "hitchhiker" snails, Mystery Snails come in a stunning array of colors, including Golden, Blue, Ivory, Black (Purple), and Jade. Their shells often feature intricate banding, making them a visual centerpiece rather than just a utility inhabitant.
Exceptional Algae Eaters: They are prolific scavengers that consume various types of soft algae and organic detritus. However, unlike some other apple snail species, they are plant-safe and generally will not eat healthy live plants if they are well-fed.
Entertaining Behavior: Mystery Snails are surprisingly active. They are famous for "parasnailing"—climbing to the top of the tank or a tall plant and intentionally letting go to "glide" back down to the bottom.
Large Size: Reaching up to 2 inches in diameter, they are large enough to be easily spotted and are generally safe from smaller predatory fish that might eat tiny pest snails.
Ease of Breeding Management: They lay distinct, pinkish-to-white clutches of eggs above the waterline. This makes population control simple; if you don't want babies, you can easily remove the visible clutch before it hatches.
Tank Requirements & Care
Water Parameters: They thrive in hard water with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5. High calcium levels are essential for maintaining a thick, healthy shell and preventing pitting or erosion.
Diet: While they eat algae, they should be supplemented with calcium-rich sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or kale.
Compatibility: Excellent tank mates for peaceful community fish like Tetras, Guppies, and Corydoras. Avoid housing them with aggressive snail-eaters like Loaches, Puffers, or large Cichlids.
